My major emphasis was in Elementary Education. I participated in Kappa Delta Pi, an Educational Honors Society, and was elected President in my senior year.
I received the NAU Distinguished Senior Award for the College of Education in 2005.
I completed the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessment (AEPA), and obtained my State of Arizona Teacher Certification from 2006-2008.
Like many students, I changed majors a few times but ultimately chose Education. However before I decided, I took many courses that provided excellent experiences and knowledge gained such as:
Communication Theory; Psychology; Computer Information Systems; Communication Analysis; Advertising; Theatre; Public Relations; Women, Gender & Ethnicity; and Photography.
Some of my education classes included:
Curriculum; Evaluation of Learning; Technology in the Classroom; Elementary Math, Science, Social Studies, and Literature; Exceptional Children; Educational Psychology; School & Society.
One of my favorite courses was ECI 499: Contemporary Developments- Teaching Literature Through Photography, taught by Dr. Martha Brady.
I taught fifth grade at Sechrist Elementary School in Flagstaff, Arizona.
In this role, I gained experience with lesson plan writing, creation of instructional materials, alignment of objectives with state standards, collaboration with grade-level team, grading practices, formative and summative assessment writing, classroom management, and more!
One of my favorite lessons was teaching students about the solar system. We all went outside to the field on the playground and I had students each represent the planets and the sun. They held string that was cut to scale to represent the distance the planets were from the sun. Then they all spun around as they moved around the sun. The visual representation made a big impact on the students, and they continued to talk about it for the rest of the year.
